How to tie it
Start the olive 110D at the 70% mark and lay a base back to the bend, then tie the 5mm olive foam cylinder on top of the shank at the 40% mark with two firm wraps and a couple of soft locking wraps. Overwrapping crushes the cylinder and costs you flotation.
Pull the foam back and segment the rear body with two or three thread wraps between the tie-down and the bend, forming a distinct abdomen that extends about half a shank past the hook.
Dub a short band of black dry fly dubbing over the foam tie-in at the 50% mark, which hides the wraps and puts a dark underside on the fly where a fish sees it.
Stack a clump of olive cow elk or brown olive deer belly and tie it in at the 60% mark as a downwing reaching to the end of the foam body, then trim the butts short and cover them with another band of black dubbing.
Tie a pair of olive round rubber legs in on each side at the 65% mark, knotted or straight, angled back and down so they hang below the body and kick on the drift.
Tie a tab of orange 2mm foam upright at the 75% mark and trim it flush and square, so a big olive hopper stays trackable at distance in glare.
Whip finish and put a small drop of Bone Dry on the thread segments in the foam body and the sighter base, which is where a foam hopper works loose after a season.
