Jenkin's Grey Boy Two Tone

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved buzzer/grub hook (Kamasan B100 or Fulling Mill barbless grub), #10-12, #10-12
  • Thread Grey (or black) 70-80 denier / 8-0

Materials

  • Body Grey tying thread or grey floss, slim and varnished (the 'Grey Boy') (-)
  • Rib Fine silver wire or pearl holographic tinsel (5 in)
  • Wing buds / cheeks Two-tone Glo-Brite / holographic tinsel, one bright color on each side (e.g. orange and red), for contrast (2 short tufts)
  • Thorax Black or peacock dubbing / black thread build-up (small pinch)
  • Breathers White Antron or poly, small tuft at head (optional) (1 small tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Start the grey thread and lay a slim, smooth grey body from the eye around into the bend, keeping it buzzer-thin.
  2. Rib the grey body forward with fine silver wire (or pearl tinsel) in 5-6 open turns and tie off at about the 75% point; varnish the body for a shiny wet look.
  3. Build a small dark thorax (black or peacock) over the front 25%.
  4. Tie in the two-tone wing buds/cheeks: a short tuft of one bright color on each side of the thorax (the classic combination puts two contrasting colors together) so they show as contrasting slashes. This contrast is the point of the 'Two Tone' in gin-clear water.
  5. Optionally add a tiny white Antron breather at the head, whip finish behind the eye, and coat the thorax/head with UV resin or varnish.
