Jenkin's Blue Flash Damsel Booby

Dry Fly · Egg · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Wide-gape wet/lure hook (Kamasan B175 or similar), #10, #10
  • Thread Olive 70 denier / 8-0

Materials

  • Eyes (booby) Booby foam eyes (paired foam balls), white. Tied at the hook eye for buoyancy (1 pair)
  • Tail Marabou, olive. About twice the shank length (1 plume)
  • Tail flash Krystal Flash, blue (pearl-blue). A few strands over the tail (4-6 strands)
  • Body Dubbed olive marabou (fibers from the base of the plume) (-)
  • Rib / flash Blue Krystal Flash or blue holographic tinsel (5 in)

How to tie it

  1. Start the olive thread just behind the eye and tie in a pair of white booby foam eyes with tight figure-eight wraps so they sit across the hook right behind the eye. The foam floats the front, so on a sinking line the fly hovers up off the bottom.
  2. Run the thread back to the bend and tie in an olive marabou tail about twice the hook-shank length, plus a few strands of blue Krystal Flash for the signature 'blue flash'.
  3. Dub the thread with soft olive marabou fibers and wind a shaggy body forward from the bend to just behind the foam eyes.
  4. Rib the body with blue Krystal Flash (or blue holo tinsel) in 4-5 open turns for flash and durability.
  5. Build a neat head between the body and the foam eyes, whip finish, and varnish.
