Tyer Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry fly, 6-12
  • Thread Tan/brown 6/0

Materials

  • Deer hair Red-dyed deer hair (Small tail tuft)
  • Poly yarn or dubbing Yellow superfine dubbing (Body)
  • Saddle hackle Brown saddle hackle (1, palmered and trimmed)
  • Deer hair Pale yellow deer hair (Underwing)
  • Turkey quill section Mottled turkey quill slips (Wing)
  • Knotted hackle stems Yellow grizzly soft hackle (2 kicker legs)
  • Deer hair Natural deer hair (Spun collar/head)

How to tie it

  1. Attach thread, wrap to the bend, and tie in a small red deer-hair tail tuft.
  2. Tie in a brown hackle by the tip and yellow yarn at the bend, then wind the yarn forward to two-thirds of the shank and tie off.
  3. Palmer the brown hackle over the body and trim it close top and bottom.
  4. Tie a small clump of pale-yellow deer hair as an underwing over the body.
  5. Tie a folded mottled turkey-quill section flat over the top as the wing, tips to the end of the body.
  6. Tie in a knotted hackle-stem kicker leg on each side.
  7. Spin and stack deer hair for a collar and head, whip finish, then trim the head bullet-shaped leaving the tips back as a collar.
