Reference Recipe

  • Hook 4x-long streamer, 4-8
  • Thread White 6/0

Materials

  • Marabou White marabou (2-3 clumps for belly/body)
  • Marabou Gray/blue marabou (1 clump for back)
  • Pearl flash Pearl/silver flashabou (several strands)
  • Marabou or hackle fibers Red marabou (1 small clump for throat/gills)
  • Adhesive eyes Silver/black eyes (1 pair)
  • UV resin or epoxy Clear uv resin (head coat)

How to tie it

  1. Start white thread and lay a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a clump of white marabou at the bend extending about one and a half shank lengths for the tail and bright belly.
  3. Add several strands of pearl or silver flash along the sides for a shad's reflective flank.
  4. Build the body forward in two or three stacked clumps of white marabou, keeping the taper slim to the 75% mark.
  5. Tie in a clump of gray-blue marabou over the top for the back, matching tail length, so the fly shows a clean gray-over-silver profile.
  6. Add a small clump of red marabou at the throat for gills.
  7. Build a smooth thread head and whip finish.
  8. Press an adhesive eye to each side and coat the head and eyes with clear resin.
