Wing/back Olive ostrich herl (Rabbit zonker strip, about 2" of leather)
Body Silver metal tape (UV Polar Chenille)
Body Bonefish tan (Cactus chenille, twisted with the Polar Chenille)
How to tie it
Lay a thread base and pre-cut about a 2" section of olive rabbit zonker strip.
Hold the leather so its front end sits just shy of the hook eye, then look underneath and mark where the thread crosses the hide — that is the tie-in point.
Pinch the leather at that point, part the hair with a bodkin (a wet fingertip helps open the gap), check the front is still clear of the eye, and lock it down with firm pinch wraps, making sure the hide has not rotated.
Pull the strip back and take a couple of locking wraps behind it.
Tie in silver UV Polar Chenille and bonefish tan cactus chenille together, tips aligned, well clear of the eye so the head does not crowd.
Grip both chenilles in hackle pliers and spin them into a single rope — the complex twist — then brush the long fibres out with a dog brush.
Palmer the twisted rope forward in open turns about an eighth of an inch apart, stroking the fibres back on each turn, so the body has bulk without becoming a solid plug.
At the tie-in point take a couple of hard wraps, pull everything back, and cut the rope out.
Pull the fibres back, form a small bullet head, bring the thread forward and brush out anything trapped.
Stroke all the fibres back and down so they sit under the fly, then finish the head.
