Materials
Deer hair Dyed red deer hair (A small stacked clump for the tail)
Wire, extra small Copper wire (One 4 in. length to counter-wrap the body hackle)
Antron dubbing Brown dubbing (Enough for a robust body over the rear half)
Dry fly hackle Brown hackle (One feather, palmered over the body)
Elk hair Dyed gold elk hair (One stacked clump for the underwing)
Marabou Orange marabou (One small plume over the elk)
Flashabou or crystal flash Copper / reddish copper (A few strands over the marabou)
Sparkle dubbing Red ice dub (A pinch for the thorax)
Dry fly hackle Grizzly hackle (One feather, 3 turns over the thorax)
Head cement Clear head cement (One drop)
How to tie it
Run red thread back to the bend. Clean the underfur out of a small clump of red-dyed deer hair, stack it, and tie it in as a short tail with a few light wraps to capture it before tightening down. Deer hair will flare, so keep the wraps progressive. Finish with a couple of turns around the base of the tail to gather it so it doesn't splay.
Tie in a length of extra-small copper wire and leave it hanging at the rear.
Dub a fairly robust brown Antron body over the rear half to two-thirds of the shank.
Tie in a brown hackle at the front of the body, palmer it back over the body in open turns, then counter-wrap the copper wire forward through the hackle to lock it in, tie off and trim.
Stack a clump of gold-dyed elk hair (clean the underfur out first or it will not stack) and tie it in on top as an underwing reaching nearly to the end of the tail. Trim the butts at an angle.
Lay a small orange marabou plume on top of the elk, pinched so it doesn't roll, tied a touch longer than the underwing.
Add a few strands of copper flash over the marabou and trim to length.
Tie in a grizzly hackle at the front for the thorax, then dub a short red sparkle-dubbing thorax up toward the eye, keeping the flash out of the way.
Palmer the grizzly hackle three turns over the red thorax, tie off, sweep the fibers back and trim.
Whip finish, checking nothing is trapped, and add a drop of head cement or hard finish.
