Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Daiichi 1120 or TMC 2488 (short shank), 16-20
  • Thread Yellow Veevus 8/0

Materials

  • Mono Clear weed guard (30-50 lb, flattened (extended body))
  • Microfibett tails Dun microfibetts (4 (split tails))
  • Z-yarn (or Zelon/Antron) White poly yarn (1 post (wing))
  • Superfine dubbing PMD (thorax)
  • Keough rooster hackle Dun hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Start yellow thread on a #16 hook leaving two tag ends, flatten a shank-length section of 40 lb mono with pliers, and tie it in at the flat point; quick whip finish.
  2. Reverse the hook in the vise, coat the mono with super glue and press the tag end to the underside, then jump the thread out to the mono tip and spiral it back down and back to the hook to build the extended body.
  3. Tie in four dun microfibett tails at the mono tip, about a body-length long, split them by running the thread between them, and set with a drop of glue; quick whip finish and reverse the hook back.
  4. Tie in a white Z-yarn post at the thorax with an X-wrap, draw it upright, and post the base with a few parachute-style wraps.
  5. Tie in a dun rooster hackle at the post.
  6. Dub the thread with a thin layer of PMD superfine, wrap a thorax, and spiral the hackle forward through it three or four turns; tie off.
  7. Whip finish and trim the wing post a little longer than the hackle.
