Deer body hair Natural gray/tan deer body hair (1 small clump tail + 1 large clump to spin)
Calf tail White calf body hair (2 small clumps)
Dry-fly hackle Brown and grizzly hackle (1 feather each)
How to tie it
Start thread behind the eye and lay a thread base back to the 70% mark.
Stack a clump of white calf tail and bind it in upright at the 70% mark, then post and figure-8 it into two divided wings standing vertical; trim the butts to a taper.
Stack a small clump of deer body hair and tie it in at the bend for a tail one shank length long; keep it sparse so the fly rides high.
Spin successive clumps of deer body hair to pack a dense flared body from the tail forward to just behind the wings, packing each bundle tight before adding the next.
Trim the spun body to a tapered cigar shape, fatter toward the thorax, and shave the underside close so the hook rides clean.
Tie in one brown and one grizzly hackle at the wing base and wind them together, a couple of turns behind the wings and two or three in front, then tie off.
Build a small head, whip finish, and add a drop of cement.
