Classic Recipe

Materials

  • Tail Dark dun fibers (sparse)
  • Body Dark claret-gray dubbing (very slim)
  • Wing Dark slate hen tips (upright)
  • Hackle Dark dun hackle (2 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a claret thread base.
  2. Tie in a pair of dark slate hen-tip wings upright and divided at the two-thirds point, then post them.
  3. Run thread to the bend and tie in a sparse bunch of dark dun fibres as a tail, one shank long, for balance.
  4. Dub a very slim, dark claret-gray body forward to the wing base; this fly is tiny and lean, so use the barest touch of dubbing.
  5. Tie in a dark dun hackle at the wing and take just 2 turns for a delicate footprint.
  6. Whip finish a small head and add a pinpoint of varnish.
