Classic Recipe

Materials

  • Tail GP crest (small)
  • Body Yellow seal fur or sub (dubbed)
  • Rib Gold oval (spiral)
  • Body hackle Ginger, palmered (full length)
  • Throat Blue jay or dyed guinea (sparse)
  • Wing Hen pheasant center tail (rolled)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and run thread to the bend.
  2. Tie in a small golden pheasant crest as a tail, curving up, half a shank long.
  3. Catch in the oval gold rib and a ginger cock hackle by the tip, then dub a yellow seal-fur body forward to one-third behind the eye.
  4. Palmer the ginger hackle forward through the body in open turns, then follow with the oval gold rib in the opposite direction to trap and protect the hackle stem; tie off and snip.
  5. Tie in a sparse blue jay (or dyed guinea) throat below the shank; the blue jay throat is the pattern's signature.
  6. Roll a slip of hen pheasant centre tail into a wing and set it low over the body, tips to the bend.
  7. Build a neat head, whip finish and varnish.
