Classic Recipe

  • Hook Blind-eye or up-eye classic salmon fly hook, 4-8
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Gold twist (as needed)
  • Tail Golden pheasant topping (1)
  • Butt Black herl (few turns)
  • Body Light olive-green silk (full shank)
  • Rib Gold embossed tinsel (5-6 turns)
  • Hackle Light olive-green hackle from the second turn, palmered (1)
  • Wing Two strips of tippet; bustard, pintail, swan dyed crimson, golden pheasant tail, and mallard (1 mixed wing)
  • Horns Blue macaw (1 per side)
  • Head Black herl (few turns)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap a tag of gold twist over the barb, then tie in a golden pheasant topping for the tail. Form a black herl butt.
  2. Cover the shank with light olive-green silk and rib it with gold embossed tinsel in evenly spaced turns.
  3. Palmer a light olive-green hackle from the second turn forward.
  4. Build the wing from two tippet strips veiled with married bustard, pintail, crimson swan and golden pheasant tail, with mallard over the top.
  5. Add blue macaw horns, form a small black herl head and whip finish.
