How to tie it
Cut a strip of Cream 2mm Foam and a strip of Tan 2mm Foam sized to the hook (7mm wide for a #6, 6mm for a #8, 5mm for a #10, 4mm for a #12). Stack cream on the bottom, tan on top, and glue only the very back end together so the front stays as two separate layers. Hand whip-finish a band of thread across the rear of the stack to make the first segment, snip both thread tags and set it aside.
Start the thread just behind the eye and dress the shank with about three layers, front to the barb and back. Leave the thread hanging just forward of the end of the base.
Snip the corners off the tail end of the foam and round it with a lighter. Put one small drop of ZapAGap at the bend, lay the stacked foam square on top of the shank so the segment at the bend matches the banded one, and bind it down with 8-10 wraps.
Lift the foam, advance the thread one segment-width and bind it down again with five or six turns to form the second segment. It will still wobble a little; that is normal for now.
Take a good bundle of EP Sculpt-A-Fly Fibers (or Macrame Yarn) and bind it in right on top in that segment, good and tight. Check it sits square on top, then trim the butts close.
Catch a Sili Leg on the near side with a turn, then one on the far side, and take one more turn over both. Creep each leg down under the wrap until it sits at the seam between the two foam colors. Leave the front ends long; they get used later.
Lift the foam, advance close to the eye and tie down ONLY the bottom cream foam, making a slightly longer front segment. Put a small shot of ZapAGap on top of the cream foam, lay a third Sili Leg flat across it toward the back of the segment, then fold the tan foam over and bind it down with three or four turns.
Pull the long front end of each rear leg under the middle leg and catch it in the front segment with a turn, near side and far side. The legs should now come off evenly spaced through the thorax. Trim the legs down a bit to keep them out of the way.
Trim the fiber wing square just beyond the end of the body. Stack a fairly sparse bunch of Natural Cow Elk Hair, measure it from the tie-in to just past the end of the body and cut the butts to length first. Spin the thread, take two turns, then pinch the hair so it flares and creases down into the foam slot. Keep the fly sparse; the wing is not meant to splay.
Snip the corners off a small piece of Orange 2mm Foam and round it with the lighter. Lay it on top of the elk, take two turns and pull straight down so it stays centered on top.
