Hook Low-water Atlantic salmon hook, #4 (smaller if you prefer)
Thread White for the rear half, black for the head 8/0
Materials
Oval tinsel, medium Gold oval tinsel (One length, serving as both tag and rib)
Floss Yellow floss (A short butt just ahead of the tag)
Chenille Green chenille (One 4 in. length for the body)
Saddle hackle Blue saddle hackle (A small, sparse throat)
Gray squirrel tail Dyed green hair (One stacked clump for the wing)
UV resin or head cement Clear uv resin (For the wing root and head)
How to tie it
Start with WHITE thread at the rear of the shank, the yellow butt goes over it and would look muddy over black, and run a short base above the barb.
Tie in the medium gold oval tinsel and wind a short tag at the rear, then leave the rest of the tinsel hanging: the same piece becomes the body rib. Keep the tag turns tight and low.
Tie in yellow floss and wind a short butt forward from the tag, keeping it just ahead of the tinsel, then tie off. It will be partly covered by the chenille, so don't fuss over the shape.
Strip a short length of core on the green chenille, tie it in and work the thread back to where the body should start. Wind the chenille forward, making three passes so the body is deliberately bulky with a slight cigar taper, and tie off well short of the eye.
Wind the gold tinsel rib forward over the chenille with closely spaced turns, sweeping the chenille fibers back out of the way as you go and adjusting spacing to follow the taper. Tie off and trim.
Tie off and cut the white thread; start black thread at the front for the head, throat and wing.
Tie a small, sparse blue saddle hackle throat under the shank. The book shows it short and subtle, so do not overdress it.
Stack a clump of green-dyed gray squirrel tail and tie it in on top as a wing reaching back to about the rear of the gape. Squirrel is slippery, so bind it firmly and work the thread back over the roots. A drop of thin cement in the roots at this stage will keep the hair from pulling out.
Build a fairly large black head, whip finish, and coat it with UV resin or head cement.
