Materials
Wing Fine deer hair (comparadun hair), cleaned and stacked (small bundle)
Tail/shuck Amber or brown-olive Zelon (Z-lon) (sparse hank)
Body Olive Superfine dubbing (match the hatch) (thin noodle)
How to tie it
Start the thread behind the eye and wind halfway down the shank, then back to the one-third mark behind the eye. That's the wing tie-in point.
Clean and stack a small bundle of fine deer hair. Measure it one shank length, then tie it in at the one-third mark with the tips extending out over the eye. Take two loose wraps, then pull straight down so the hair flares on top of the shank.
Post the wing upright with tight wraps in front of the butts, then spread the hair into a 180-degree fan across the top of the hook. The fan is what keeps the fly upright and flush in the film. No hackle needed.
Tie in a sparse hank of Zelon at the wing and bind it down the shank to the bend, letting it trail a half shank length behind as the shuck. Keep it crinkled and sparse. It imitates the nymphal husk the dun is still dragging.
Dub a thin, tapered abdomen forward from the shuck to the back of the wing.
Dub in front of the wing, a wrap or two under the fan, to prop the wing upright, then finish with a small thread head and whip finish.
