Barred mallard or teal flank fibers Barred gray mallard flank fibers (Exactly 3 fibers for the tail)

How to tie it
Start the black thread and run a base back to the bend.
Tie in exactly three barred mallard or teal flank fibers as a fairly long tail. Weaver was specific about three (not two, not four) and did not mind if they splayed a little.
Take the thread forward, then tie in the brassie-size wire and bind it back to the tail.
Dub a tapered body of black rabbit fur (fur, not wool) forward to about two eye-widths behind the eye. Expect two applications; go back over any thin spots to even it out.
Wind the wire rib forward in evenly spaced turns, using it to squash down any fat spot in the dubbing, tie it off and helicopter it away.
For the beard, tie in a bunch of 20-30 hackle fibers on top of the shank pointing FORWARD over the eye, check that they will reach to about the hook point, secure with a couple of wraps going back and trim the butts.
Fold the fiber bunch back and down under the shank so it sits as a beard/throat, and lock it in place with a few wraps.
Tie a matched pair of natural duck quill slips flat on top of the body, low profile, riding slightly down each side rather than upright, reaching to about the end of the tail. Take a couple of wraps to lock them, then trim the butts.
Build a full wet fly head over the butts, whip finish and finish with a drop of head cement (build the head up with the cement if your thread is fine).
