Classic Recipe

  • Hook Jig nymph hook (60-degree), Umpqua XC210BL / Firehole 516, #14-18, #14-18
  • Thread Pale pink (body quill) Body-quill thread (fine)

Materials

  • Hook Jig nymph hook, Umpqua XC210BL or Firehole 516, #14-18 (1)
  • Bead Black slotted tungsten bead, 7/64" (2.8mm) (1)
  • Thread / body Veevus Body Quill, pale pink (forms the segmented body) (-)
  • Tail Coq de Leon fibers, dark pardo (6-8 fibers)
  • Collar Rainbow Sow-Scud dubbing (sparse), behind the bead (small pinch)
  • Coating Loon UV Clear Fly Finish - Flow (thin), UV cured (-)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a black slotted tungsten bead to the eye of the jig hook (slot forward). Start the pale pink body quill thread behind the bead.
  2. Tie in 6-8 dark pardo coq de leon fibers at the bend for a tail about half a shank-length long, then bind the butts forward smoothly.
  3. Wrap the pale pink body quill forward in slightly overlapping turns to form a smooth, segmented pink body up to just behind the bead.
  4. Dub a very sparse collar of rainbow sow-scud dubbing directly behind the bead, just a wisp for a buggy hot-spot look; whip finish.
  5. Coat the whole pink body with a thin layer of Loon UV Flow resin and cure to a hard, glossy, fast-sinking shell (keep the resin off the bead face and the dubbing collar).
