Dry Fly · Trout · Advanced · 2 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2X-3X long dry/stimulator hook, 10-12
  • Thread Brown/to match 70 denier

Materials

  • Select cow elk (tail) Brown deer body hair (sparse clump)
  • Tinsel (body) Ice blue pearl (1 length)
  • UV resin (Loon Flow) Clear uv resin (light coat)
  • Razor foam wing (0.5 mm, stonefly cut) Translucent gray foam (1 piece)
  • Select cow elk (overwing) Bleached elk hair (half-pencil clump)
  • Hackle Brown hackle (1 feather)
  • Superfine dry-fly dubbing (thorax) Brown dubbing (small amount)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and wrap to the bend, then tie in a sparse, low-flaring brown cow elk tail about a hook-gap long.
  2. Build a smooth, slightly tapered body base, tie in ice blue pearl tinsel at the front, wrap it back to the tail with overlapping turns and then forward, and tie off.
  3. Give the body a light coat of UV resin and cure for a translucent effect.
  4. Tie in the razor-foam wing so the back sits even with the bend.
  5. Stack and tie in a bleached cow elk overwing extending just past the bend, flare it, then secure and trim the butts at an angle.
  6. Tie in a brown hackle at the head (stem on top, wrapped to the side) and dub a reverse-tapered brown superfine thorax to flatten the head.
  7. Palmer the brown hackle forward in close turns to just behind the eye and tie off; whip finish (skip head cement to keep the hackle clean).
