Iced Cased Caddis

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL curved caddis/scud hook, 10-14
  • Thread Black 70 denier

Materials

  • Lead-free wire (weight) (8-10 turns)
  • Hare's ear dubbing + peacock Ice Dub (case) Dark natural / peacock hare s ear dubbing ice dub (pinch each)
  • Bright dubbing (larva head) Caddis green (small pinch)
  • Hen hackle (legs) Black hen hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap 8-10 turns of lead-free wire over the front two-thirds of the shank, start the thread and lock it down.
  2. Blend dark hare's ear with peacock Ice Dub and spin it in a dubbing loop.
  3. Wrap the loop forward as a shaggy, buggy case covering the rear two-thirds of the shank, stopping at the 70% mark, then pick it out rough so it looks like glued grit and debris.
  4. In front of the case, dub a short bright caddis-green collar to suggest the larva poking out of its case.
  5. Take 1-2 turns of a soft black hen hackle in front of the green and sweep the fibers back for legs and head.
  6. Build a small head, whip finish and cement.
