Ice Cream Cone Midge

Midge · Trout · Beginner · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved midge, 16-20
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead White tungsten or glass bead (1)
  • Body Black thread (slim)
  • Rib Silver wire (spiral)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a white tungsten or glass bead to the eye of the curved midge hook; this is the "ice cream" that copies a pupa's pale gill tufts.
  2. Start black thread behind the bead and catch in a length of fine silver wire.
  3. Wrap a slim, smooth black thread body down around the bend and back up to just behind the bead, keeping it thin.
  4. Spiral the silver wire forward in 5-7 even turns as a rib for segmentation, tie off and helicopter the tag to break it.
  5. Build a tiny thread collar behind the bead, whip finish and add a drop of head cement.
