Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/pupa hook, Tiemco 2457 / 2487, #10-16, #10-16
  • Thread Black 8/0 / 70 denier

Materials

  • Hook Curved scud/pupa hook, Tiemco 2457 or 2487, #10-16 (1)
  • Bead White bead (glass or metal), the ice-cream-cone gill trigger (1)
  • Thread Black UTC 70 denier (body base) (-)
  • Body Bright/flashy body, fl. red or chartreuse Glo-Brite floss, or black thread over-wrapped with pearl/silver Flashabou or holographic tinsel (-)
  • Rib Fine silver wire or red Ultra Wire (1 strand)
  • Optional gills White Antron or poly, tiny tuft in front of the bead (few fibers)
  • Coating UV resin or clear head cement over the body (-)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a white bead to the eye, the white bead imitates the pupa's gill filaments and is the pattern's signature. Start black thread behind the bead and run to the bend.
  2. Build a bright body: either wrap a base of fl. red/chartreuse Glo-Brite floss, or wrap a slim black thread body and over-wrap it with pearl/holographic tinsel for a flashy 'Bright' finish, up to just behind the bead.
  3. Rib the body with 4-6 evenly spaced open turns of fine silver wire (or red wire) to segment it and add sparkle; helicopter off the excess.
  4. If desired, tie in a tiny tuft of white Antron just behind the bead to suggest gills.
  5. Whip finish behind the bead and coat the body with a thin layer of UV resin (or clear cement) for a shiny, durable, fast-sinking finish; cure.
