Materials

  • Hook Tiemco 2487 curved scud/nymph hook, #14-18 (1)
  • Thread Uni-thread 8/0 rusty brown (or olive) (-)
  • Tail Mallard flank dyed wood-duck (8-10 fibers)
  • Rib Rusty brown (or olive) Uni-thread (1 strand)
  • Abdomen (tone 1) Olive hare's ear / olive rabbit blend, dubbed loosely (pinch)
  • Thorax (tone 2) Rust or hot-orange rabbit blend, dubbed heavier for contrast (pinch)
  • Wingcase / hunchback Dark mottled turkey tail (section)
  • Legs Mallard flank dyed wood-duck (5-6 fibers per side)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and run to the bend. Tie in 8-10 wood-duck-dyed mallard flank fibers for a tail about half a shank-length long, plus a length of thread for the rib.
  2. Dub a slim olive-toned abdomen forward to about the 60% point (tone 1), keeping the wraps loose for translucency.
  3. Rib the abdomen with 4-5 open turns of thread and tie off.
  4. Tie in a section of dark mottled turkey tail at the 60% point for the wingcase.
  5. Dub a fatter, contrasting rust/hot-orange thorax (tone 2) from the 60% point to behind the eye to create both the two-tone effect and the humped profile.
  6. Tie in 5-6 wood-duck fibers per side as legs to the hook point.
  7. Pull the turkey tail over the thorax as a humped wingcase, tie down behind the eye, trim, form a head, whip finish and cement.
