Rib Rusty brown Uni-thread (a second length as ribbing) (1 strand)
Abdomen Rust rabbit blend (70% rust, 15% hot orange, 15% olive hare's ear), dubbed loosely for translucency (pinch)
Wingcase / hunchback Dark mottled turkey tail (section)
Thorax Same rust rabbit blend, dubbed heavier (~50% larger than abdomen) (pinch)
Legs Mallard flank dyed wood-duck (5-6 fibers per side)
How to tie it
Start rusty brown thread and, if weighting, add a few turns of.015 lead-free wire over the thorax area. Run the thread to the bend.
Tie in 8-10 wood-duck-dyed mallard flank fibers for a tail about half a shank-length long. Tie in a length of rusty brown thread at the bend for the rib.
Dub a slim abdomen of the rust rabbit blend loosely (loose wraps give the translucency Andy Burk wanted) forward to about the 60% point.
Rib the abdomen with 4-5 open turns of the rusty brown thread and tie off.
Tie in a section of dark mottled turkey tail at the 60% point, pointing back, to be pulled over as the wingcase/hunchback later.
Dub a noticeably fatter thorax of the same rust blend from the 60% point to just behind the eye. The bulky thorax creates the 'hunchback' profile.
Tie in 5-6 wood-duck fibers on each side as legs, sweeping back to about the hook point.
Pull the turkey tail forward over the thorax to form a humped wingcase and tie down behind the eye; trim, build a small head, whip finish and cement.
