Classic Recipe

  • Hook Heavyweight wet-fly / longshank lure hook, Kamasan B830 or B175, #8-10, #8-10
  • Thread Black 6/0 / 140 denier

Materials

  • Hook Longshank/heavy wet-fly lure hook, Kamasan B830 or B175, #8-10 (1)
  • Eyes / head Silver (or gold) bead-chain eyes tied at the head (1 pair)
  • Tail Black marabou (fairly sparse) (1 plume)
  • Tail flash Silver or gold holographic tinsel / UV Flashabou (6-8 strands)
  • Body Gold (or silver) Fritz chenille (or holographic Lurex/tinsel body) (1 length)
  • Rib (if tinsel body) Oval gold or silver tinsel (1 strand)
  • Hackle Grizzle (or cree) cock hackle, palmered (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start black thread behind the eye and tie in a pair of silver bead-chain eyes with figure-eight wraps just behind the hook eye, these give the fly its diving/jigging action.
  2. Run the thread to the bend and tie in a sparse black marabou tail about one shank-length long, then add 6-8 strands of silver holographic tinsel over it the same length.
  3. Tie in a grizzle cock hackle by the tip at the bend, then tie in a length of gold Fritz chenille.
  4. Wrap the gold Fritz forward in touching turns to just behind the bead-chain eyes and tie off; pick out the fibers.
  5. Palmer the grizzle hackle forward in 4-5 open turns to behind the eyes, tie off and trim.
  6. Figure-eight thread around the eyes, build a neat head, whip finish and cement.
