Humpy Foam Royal
Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version
Reference Recipe
- Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-16
- Thread Black 8/0
Materials
- Tail Moose or dark elk hair (A small pinch)
- Overbody/hump Foam strip (tan or black) (One thin strip)
- Wing Natural deer or elk hair (A pinch (doubles as hump hair))
- Center band Red floss or thread (Short length)
- Hackle Brown and/or grizzly hackle (One or two feathers)
How to tie it
- Start the thread and tie in a short tail of moose or dark elk fibers at the bend, one shank length long.
- Tie in a thin foam strip at the bend, then over it tie a bunch of deer hair with tips pointing forward over the eye (these become the wing).
- Build a Royal band by wrapping red floss or thread over the rear third of the shank, then advance to the 65% mark.
- Pull the deer hair and then the foam strip forward over the top to form a raised hump, and tie both down at 65%.
- Stand the forward deer-hair tips up and divide them into an upright wing with figure-8 wraps and posting turns.
- Tie in the hackle behind the wing and take 4-5 turns through and in front of the wing, whip finish at the eye and cement.
