Hot Wing Elk Caddis

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Tan 8/0

Materials

  • Body Tan or olive dubbing (Thin noodle)
  • Body hackle Brown hackle (One saddle feather)
  • Hot wing Fluorescent orange poly yarn (A short tuft)
  • Wing Natural elk hair (A pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread mid-shank and lay a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a brown saddle hackle by the tip, then dub a thin body forward to 75%.
  3. Palmer the hackle forward in 5-6 open turns and tie off at 75%.
  4. Tie a short tuft of fluorescent orange poly yarn flat on top as a sighter, tips just past the hook point.
  5. Clean and stack a pinch of elk hair, measure it to the bend, and bind it over the poly at 75% with tightening turns so the butts flare.
  6. Trim the butts to a short head, whip finish and cement.
