Hot Wing Caddis

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-18
  • Thread Olive or tan 8/0

Materials

  • Body Olive or tan dubbing (Thin noodle)
  • Underwing Natural deer or elk hair (A small pinch)
  • Hot wing Fluorescent orange poly yarn (A short tuft)
  • Hackle Brown hackle (One feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread behind the eye and lay a base back to the bend.
  2. Dub a thin tapered body forward to the 70% mark.
  3. Tie in a small pinch of deer or elk hair as a downwing over the body, tips reaching the bend.
  4. On top of the hair wing add a short tuft of fluorescent orange poly yarn, trimmed to sit just shy of the hook bend, as a hi-vis wing.
  5. Tie in a brown hackle in front of the wing and take 3-4 turns, sweeping fibers back and down.
  6. Build a small head, whip finish and cement.
