Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/grub hook, Tiemco 2457 / Kamasan B100, #10-16, #10-16
  • Thread Olive (or tan) 8/0 / 70 denier

Materials

  • Hook Curved scud/grub hook, Tiemco 2457 or Kamasan B100, #10-16 (1)
  • Weight (optional) .015" lead-free wire or a few turns under the body (-)
  • Thread Olive UTC 70 denier (-)
  • Body Olive Sow-Scud / seal's fur blend (e.g. 60% olive with a touch of amber) (pinch)
  • Hot spot Fluorescent pink (or fl. orange) dubbing, a band in the middle of the body. The pregnant/hot-spot trigger (small pinch)
  • Shellback Clear/olive Scud Back (Thin Skin or stretch latex) over the top (1 strip)
  • Rib Fine gold or clear mono, over the shellback (1 strand)

How to tie it

  1. If weighting, add a few turns of lead-free wire along the shank. Start olive thread and run to the bend.
  2. Tie in a strip of clear/olive Scud Back at the bend, pointing back, and a strand of fine gold wire (or mono) for the rib.
  3. Dub the rear third of the body with olive scud dubbing.
  4. Dub a distinct band of fluorescent pink dubbing in the middle third. This is the 'hot spot' (imitating a pregnant female's brood spot); then dub olive again over the front third up to the eye.
  5. Pull the Scud Back forward over the top to form a curved shell and tie down at the eye.
  6. Rib the shellback with 4-5 open turns of the gold wire/mono to segment it, tie off and helicopter the excess.
  7. Pick out a little dubbing underneath for legs, build a small head, whip finish and cement.
  8. For an orange variant, use fl. orange in the hot-spot band.
