Thread Hot orange 70 denier
Materials
Body Golden olive material (Troutline herl)
Ribbing Yellow mcflylon (elastic thread)
Wing Natural black, natural grey or khaki (one CDC feather)
Thorax Natural or yellow material (pure squirrel dubbing)
How to tie it
Start the hot orange 70 denier thread at the eye and wrap back to the bend, leaving a few turns of bare orange showing at the rear. That exposed thread is the hot spot the pattern is named for, so build it before anything covers it.
Tie in the yellow elastic thread at the bend, then wrap a slim golden olive herl body forward to the 65% mark.
Rib forward with the yellow elastic thread in four or five turns, stretching it slightly as you go. Stretched elastic bites into the herl and locks it down. Herl on its own is fragile and will not survive many fish.
Tie in a single CDC feather as a short emerger wing over the thorax, tips no longer than the body. One feather is enough at these sizes; two drowns the profile.
Dub a small thorax of pure squirrel in natural or yellow around and in front of the wing base, then whip finish a tiny head.
Fish it in the film on a dead drift to fish working just under the surface.
