Hot Spot Ant

Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body Black dubbing (or black foam) (Two small clumps)
  • Hackle Black hackle (A few turns)
  • Hot spot/indicator Fluorescent orange or pink poly yarn (A short tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread at the bend and dub a tight, shiny rear ball (the gaster) over the back third of the shank.
  2. Advance the bare thread forward to the 65% mark, leaving a distinct pinched waist.
  3. Dub a slightly smaller front ball (the head) over the front third, stopping short of the eye.
  4. At the waist between the two balls, wind 2-3 turns of black hackle and figure-8 to lock it.
  5. Tie a short tuft of fluorescent poly yarn upright on top of the thorax as a hot-spot sighter, then trim it to a stub.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and add a drop of cement to the head.
