Hot Head San Juan Worm

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/caddis hook, 12-16
  • Thread Red or wine 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Hot orange or red (metallic) bead (One, sized to hook)
  • Worm body Red, wine or worm-brown Ultra Chenille (vernille) (One length, about 1.5 shanks)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the hot bead to the eye and start the thread behind it.
  2. Lay a thread base along the shank and center a length of Ultra Chenille on top so equal amounts overhang each end.
  3. Bind the chenille down along the shank with tight wraps front and rear, leaving a tail-end trailing past the bend and a front end reaching past the bead.
  4. Wrap the thread to just behind the bead and whip finish.
  5. Trim both chenille ends to length and taper each tip with a lighter flame held close (do not touch) so they melt to a point.
  6. Add a drop of cement to the thread wraps.
