Hot Head Hares Ear

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard nymph hook, 12-16
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Hot orange or pink (metallic) bead (One, sized to hook)
  • Tail Hare's mask guard hairs (A small pinch)
  • Rib Gold wire (Fine, one length)
  • Body/thorax Hare's ear dubbing (Two thin noodles)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the hot bead onto the hook, small hole forward, and start the thread behind it.
  2. Wrap to the bend and tie in a small pinch of hare's guard hairs for a tail half a shank long.
  3. Tie in the gold wire at the bend, then dub a thin tapered abdomen forward over the rear two-thirds.
  4. Counter-wrap the wire forward in 4-5 open turns for a rib and tie it off; helicopter the tag to break it.
  5. Dub a fatter, shaggy thorax up behind the bead, using half the dubbing you think.
  6. Pick out the thorax fibers on each side for legs, whip finish behind the bead and cement.
