Start the black UTC 70 thread behind the eye of the size 10 B175 and run it down the shank.
Pinch a small bunch of fibres from a single Black Hen feather (from the back of the cape) and bind it in at the bend as a short tail. Not a long tail, just enough to show. Work the thread back down over the butts.
Catch in a length of Fine silver wire at the bend and bind it down to the same point, then swing the wire out of the way.
Select two long-barbed centre fibres of Black pheasant tail, catch them in by the tips at the bend, and take the thread up to the front. Wrap the pheasant tail forward, using your left hand to keep the fibres from untwisting, and stop a little short of the eye. Bind off and snip the waste.
Rib the body with the Fine silver wire in open turns in the opposite direction to the pheasant tail, finishing at the same point; the wire adds a little segmentation but mainly protects the pheasant tail from teeth. Bind off with a couple of wraps and break off the wire.
Turn the hook upside down in the vise. Pinch a second bunch of Black Hen, similar in size to the tail, and lay it under the shank as a beard so the tips reach just into the bend, not further. Hold it with a couple of loose wraps so you can shift it, then lock it in with tight wraps and snip the butts.
Turn the hook back upright and whip finish the black thread. The head will look untidy for a moment; the next step covers it.
Start the GloBright No 5 fluorescent red thread over the black whip finish and build a small hot-spot head. Whip finish and add a drop of varnish, which also brings the colour up.
