Hot Egg

Egg · Trout · Steelhead · Salmon · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved egg/scud hook, 8-14
  • Thread Fluorescent pink 6/0

Materials

  • Egg yarn Hot pink or fluorescent orange egg yarn (Two short clumps)
  • Hot spot nugget Contrasting chartreuse or red hot spot nugget (A few fibers)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread at the mid-point of the shank and lay a short thread base.
  2. Cut two clumps of egg yarn; hold the first on top of the shank and take two loose gathering wraps, then pull tight so the yarn flares up around the hook.
  3. Add the second clump underneath the same way so the yarn surrounds the shank evenly.
  4. For the hot spot, lay a few fibers of contrasting yarn on top and lock them in at the same tie point.
  5. Gather all the yarn upright, and while pinching it into a ball above the hook, snip it into a round egg roughly one and a half hook-gaps across.
  6. Whip finish under the egg at the mid-shank tie point and add a drop of cement to the wraps.
