Start black thread behind the bead of a small beaded nymph hook and trim the tag. Insert a short piece of lead-free wire into the back of the bead to lock it and add weight, wrap the thread back over it, and return toward the bead.
Grab the wire and wrap it forward in close touching turns up to the thread, then helicopter off the excess and build a small thread dam behind the bead. Carry the thread well into the bend and form a small thread dam there.
Tie in two black biots just ahead of the rear thread dam and continue wrapping back against them so they splay apart into a V tail; secure the tag ends forward to start the body.
Insert a length of brassy or silver wire into the bead and wrap it back toward the tail; set the wire aside.
With the thread, build a smooth tapered transition body: wrap up to the wire, reverse almost to the start, and repeat until you have the bulk you want.
Wrap the wire forward in open, evenly spaced spirals for a segmented, shiny body; tie it off with wraps front and back and helicopter off the excess.
Tie in two more black biots in a V over the top as the wing/legs, splayed like the tail; trim the excess.
Dub a black hare's-ear thorax: a tight noodle wrapped forward to the bead, then a looser, buggier noodle around the bead with the fibers pulled back; brush it out buggy.
Add a drop of UV resin to the thread, whip finish, seat and snip the knot, and cure with a UV light.
