Materials

  • Tether (30 lb Fireline)
  • Tail Dyed red arctic fox (golden pheasant crest)
  • Rear body Pink ears (Ice Dub in a split thread)
  • Rear hackle Dyed pink rear hackle (silver pheasant, folded)
  • Rear collar Pink ears (Ice Dub Shimmer Fringe spun in a split thread)
  • Veil (4 strands fine ostrich herl, one on each side)
  • Mid body Purple then emerald green (Ice Dub in a split thread)
  • Flash Pink wing n flash fibres (crinkle flash, doubled, on all four sides)
  • Front hackles Dyed yellow heron and dyed pink guinea fowl (folded, wrapped in sequence)

How to tie it

  1. Bind the 25 mm Waddington shank from the halfway point back to the rear loop, then loop 30 lb Fireline through the OPST hook and thread the tags through the rear loop. Leave enough tether to change hooks. That is the point of a shank fly.
  2. Pull the tags through the front loop with pliers so they sit flush, bind them back parallel, then thread them through the rear loop again and lock them down. Trim flush and cement.
  3. Set a dyed red golden pheasant crest tail on the threaded shank, cement the whole wrap, then park the hook out of the way with a turn of lead wire.
  4. Spin pink Ice Dub in a split thread, brushing the noodle out to thin the bulk before wrapping, and take it to the halfway point. Follow with a folded dyed pink silver pheasant hackle and a spun pink Shimmer Fringe collar.
  5. Set four fine ostrich herl strands on the four sides of the shank, tips just past the hook bend, then build purple and emerald green Ice Dub sections forward the same way.
  6. Add doubled pink crinkle flash on all four sides, then a folded dyed yellow heron hackle and a folded dyed pink guinea, securing each stem in the groove underneath the shank so the head stays slim.
  7. Finish with four dyed pink peacock herl tips, jungle cock cheeks, a soft-looped clump of dyed pink Finn raccoon over the top and blue grizzly hackle tips on each side. Build a red head, leaving a small gap behind the eye in case you want to riffle hitch it, then epoxy.
