Reference Recipe

  • Hook Senyo-style ~½-inch shank with wire trailing-hook loop, ½-inch shank + trailing hook (steelhead/salmon)
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Dubbing (dubbing-loop body) Red ice dub (1 loop for body base)
  • Marabou (palmered) Purple marabou (1 plume)
  • Barred/striped marabou (front collar) Burnt orange (1 long-fibered plume)
  • Barbell/dumbbell eyes - (1 pair)
  • Wire - (for trailing-hook loop)
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (for head)

How to tie it

  1. Place the ½-inch shank in the vise. Feed a length of wire through the front eye, form a loop, thread the trailing hook onto the loop (riding point-up about a shank length back), and cinch it down.
  2. Pull the wire tag ends forward along both sides of the shank, lash them down to the front, and trim.
  3. Start black thread and cover the shank and wire back to the rear.
  4. Build a dubbing loop, spin the red dubbing into a tight cord, and wrap it forward to form a short tapered body base for the marabou to flare against; tie off.
  5. Tie in a purple marabou plume and palmer it forward over the rear body, sweeping the fibers back; tie off and leave room at the front.
  6. Tie in a set of barbell eyes near the front with figure-eight wraps and secure them centered.
  7. Tie in a long-fibered burnt-orange barred marabou plume just behind the eyes and palmer it forward around the eyes to build a full contrasting collar; tie off.
  8. Whip finish behind the eye, then coat the thread head with clear UV resin and cure.
