Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry, 10-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body base Pearl Flashabou or tinsel (wrapped shank)
  • Foam Black over white foam, layered (1 strip)
  • Legs White round rubber (2 pairs)
  • Hackle Grizzly hackle (through mid-body)

How to tie it

  1. Mount a standard dry hook and start black thread behind the eye, laying a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a strand of pearl Flashabou or tinsel and wrap it forward over the shank as a flash underbody, then tie off.
  3. Cut a strip of black foam laminated over white foam, one hook-gap wide.
  4. Tie the foam down at the bend, leaving a short tag over the back, then bind it at the front third — leaving a deliberate gap of bare shank in the middle. That gap is where the hackle goes and is the whole construction.
  5. Tie in a grizzly hackle at the rear of the gap.
  6. Palmer the hackle through the gap in 4-5 turns and tie it off at the front.
  7. Tie in white round rubber legs at each corner of the foam body, two pairs, splayed.
  8. Build a small head, whip finish and cement.
