How to tie it
Mount the 2.8mm silver slotted bead on the jig hook, then wind eight or ten turns of.010 lead-free wire and shove them up into the slot behind the bead. On a size 16 the wire does two jobs. It adds the weight the small bead can't, and it wedges the bead so it never spins.
Start the purple 70 denier behind the lead, build small thread ramps at both ends of the wire, and carry the thread back to the bend. Those ramps matter because the body on this fly is thin enough that any step in the underbody telegraphs straight through.
Tie in a short clump of purple pheasant tail fibres at the bend for a tail about half a shank long, then tie in the small silver wire on the near side at the same point. Keep the tail stubby. A long tail on an SOS just gets nipped.
Wrap the thread forward in smooth touching turns to the 70% mark to form the slim body, then spiral the silver wire forward over it in five or six evenly spaced turns and helicopter it off. The wire is both segmentation and armour; without it, teeth strip a thread body in a few fish.
At the 70% mark tie in a length of red Mirage tinsel pointing rearward for the wing case, and one strand of UV purple Krystal Flash along each side reaching back to about the hook point for the legs. Get the flash lying flat on the sides, not on top, or it will bunch under the wing case.
Dub a short, deliberately chunky thorax of violet Microflash forward to just behind the bead, then fold the red tinsel over the top and tie it off behind the bead. That flat, centred flash panel is the trigger on this pattern, so keep it broad and untwisted.
Whip finish, trim, and coat the wing case and thread head with a thin layer of Solarez Bone Dry to lock the tinsel down.
