Slide the 2.3mm silver tungsten bead onto the Firehole 520 and seat it at the eye, then start black thread behind it.
Bind in three or four pheasant tail fibers (muskrat gray standing in for black) as a short tail, wrapping back to the bend.
Tie in the small silver Ultrawire and wrap thread back and forth over the shank, spinning the bobbin to flatten the thread so the body lays smooth and thin. Build a slim flat thread abdomen forward, leaving room for the thorax.
Rib forward with the silver wire in evenly spaced turns; the small wire lets you fit a few more segments. Tie off and helicopter the wire to break it.
Double the red Glo Brite floss over until you have four strands and tie it in on top of the shank at the front of the abdomen, pointing rearward, for the wingcase.
Bind four strands of black Krystal Flash on top, projecting forward over the eye like a classic pheasant tail leg set, and snip the butts.
Dub a thin, tight noodle of black Bug Dub and wrap a small, neat thorax behind the bead.
Pull the floss forward over the thorax and secure with a couple of wraps. Pull the Krystal Flash back along each side, then trim the floss close and take a couple of tight wraps.
Whip finish behind the bead, then trim the Krystal Flash legs to length.
