Nymph · Trout · Advanced · 2 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Nymph hook (TMC 2487), 16
  • Thread Olive/dun (A-dot 8/0) 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Gold bead (3/32 in (2.3 mm))
  • Pheasant tail fibers (tail) Natural pheasant tail fibers (small clump)
  • Ultra wire (rib) Silver wire (small)
  • Floss (wing case) Red floss (1 strand)
  • Crystal Flash (legs) Olive crinkle flash fine (4 strands)
  • SLF squirrel spiky dubbing (thorax) Olive/buggy (small amount)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the gold bead onto a size 16 hook, start the thread, and wrap to the bend.
  2. Tie in a slightly-long natural pheasant tail tail, then wrap a few turns down the bend so the tail angles down; trim.
  3. Tie in small silver wire for the rib and wrap a thin thread body forward.
  4. Wrap the silver wire forward as the rib and tie off.
  5. Tie in red floss on top of the shank for the wing case.
  6. Tie in four strands of olive Crystal Flash pointing forward for the legs.
  7. Dub a buggy squirrel thorax, then split the Crystal Flash two per side with wraps so the legs stick out.
  8. Pull the red floss over the top as the wing case, secure, and trim.
  9. Whip finish and trim the legs to length.
