Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Closed-cell foam Black craft foam mm (1 strip)
  • Rubber legs Black ostrich herl (1-2 strands)
  • Poly yarn Fluorescent orange or pink poly yarn (small tuft for post)

How to tie it

  1. Cut a foam strip about a hook-gap wide and tie it in at the bend, leaving a tag that forms the rear gaster bump.
  2. Bind the foam down to the waist at mid-shank, pull the front section forward, and cinch it to create a distinct pinched waist between two foam segments.
  3. At the waist, figure-8 in a strand or two of rubber legs, one splayed to each side.
  4. Tie in a short upright fluorescent poly post at the waist and trim to about a hook-gap tall.
  5. Pull the remaining foam forward to form the front head bump and bind it just behind the eye.
  6. Whip finish under the foam head and add a drop of cement.
