How to tie it
Mount a size 14 wide-gape dry fly hook, the gape matters on an ant pattern, start the thread and trim the tag.
Lay down a healthy platform of thread and go back over it. That platform is what stops the foam body spinning on the shank.
Measure the foam ant body so the front sticks out only about one hook-eye length past the eye, plus the white tip.
Lash the body down with a few big wraps first, then go back over them much tighter.
Trim the rear of the body off straight back so it is roughly equal in length to the front.
Prepare four CDC feathers, two white and two golden brown, by cutting the tips off each so you have fibres and no stem.
Stack them alternating white, golden brown, white, golden brown, marrying the tips up as best you can. Alternating gives the wing a mottled look, and tying in fibres rather than stems packs a lot of CDC in without bulk.
Tie the married fibres in, trying to catch only fibres and not stem, trim the tips off and secure everything down.
Tie in a very small pinch of fluorescent orange Para Post, doubled over and wrapped back, then trim it shorter than the CDC wing.
Pinch the CDC wing off so it is just a little longer than the body at the rear, and take a couple of wraps behind the foam body to secure the post and help it stand up.
Take one daddy long legs leg, cut it in half, tie the half in on the near side, wrap forward, then double it over to the far side and wrap back, that gives four legs, two per side.
Strip the lower fibres from a brown hen neck hackle, tie it in on top and take four or five wraps. Vary the number to suit how high you want it to float; four or five means you never have to think about dressing it.
Snip the hackle off, trim the leg butts and build a small head. Keep the wing and legs out of the way, whip finish twice and trim. No glue, the fishes' teeth will destroy the foam long before the thread lets go.
