Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-18
  • Thread Tan 8/0

Materials

  • Dry-fly dubbing Tan or olive dry fly dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Deer or elk hair Natural deer hair (1 clump for wing)
  • Poly yarn Fluorescent orange or white poly yarn (small tuft)
  • Dry-fly hackle Ginger hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread mid-shank and dub a slim tapered body from the bend to the 70% mark.
  2. Stack a clump of deer hair and tie it in as a downwing tent over the body, tips reaching just past the bend.
  3. Over the wing butts, tie in a short upright tuft of bright poly yarn and trim it to about a hook-gap tall for visibility.
  4. Tie in a ginger hackle just ahead of the wing.
  5. Take 3-4 turns of hackle in front of the wing and tie off, then trim the bottom barbs flat so it rides low.
  6. Build a small head, whip finish, and cement.
