Hi-vis Ant

Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Dubbing Black dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Dry-fly hackle Black hackle (1 feather)
  • Poly yarn Fluorescent orange poly yarn (small tuft for post)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread at the bend and dub a shiny, round rear gaster (bump) over the back third of the shank, then leave a bare waist.
  2. At the 65% mark, tie in a short upright tuft of fluorescent orange poly as a hi-vis indicator post and trim it to about a hook-gap tall.
  3. Tie in a black hackle at the waist just behind the post.
  4. Take 2-3 turns of hackle around the waist to suggest legs and tie off.
  5. Dub a smaller front head bump ahead of the hackle to the eye, keeping the two-bump ant profile.
  6. Whip finish and add a tiny drop of cement.
