Hexagenia Foam

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL dry-fly hook, 6-10
  • Thread Yellow 6/0

Materials

  • Closed-cell foam Tan/yellow closed cell foam (1 strip)
  • Moose body hair Dark moose body hair (3 fibers for tails)
  • Deer hair Natural deer hair (1 clump for wing)
  • Dry-fly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Cut a foam strip about a hook-gap wide and tie it in at the bend with the tag extending rearward as an extended body one shank length past the bend; a few tight thread cinches segment it.
  2. Split 2-3 moose fibers as tails off the foam tip.
  3. Bring the thread to the hook and bind the front of the foam strip down along the shank to the 70% mark.
  4. Stack a clump of deer hair and tie it upright as a wing about one shank length tall.
  5. Tie in a grizzly hackle behind the wing and take 4-6 turns through the thorax, then secure and trim.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and cement the head only.
