Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL dry-fly hook, 6-10
  • Thread Yellow 6/0

Materials

  • Moose body hair Dark moose body hair (3 fibers for tails)
  • Dubbing Pale yellow/cream dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Poly yarn or Zelon White/cream antron (1 length for spent wings)
  • Dry-fly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread at the bend and split-tie 3 moose fibers as long, widely splayed tails, over one shank length long.
  2. Dub a slim, tapered pale-yellow body from the bend forward to the 65% mark.
  3. Tie in a length of white poly yarn across the shank and figure-8 it into flat, outstretched spent wings, one shank length per side.
  4. Optionally take 2-3 turns of grizzly hackle at the wing base, then trim top and bottom so the wings stay flat in the film.
  5. Dub a slim thorax forward to the eye, then whip finish and cement the head.
