Start the UNI Waxed Thread and walk it back to the barb.
Clean the underfur from a clump of Deer Hair Black, stack it, and trim the butts short. Measure the tail against the hook point for length and bind it in at the barb. Bind the remaining butts forward up the shank to build body bulk, trimming so bare shank stays free at the front for the bullet head.
Walk the thread back and tie in a brown hackle from the Whiting Farms Cape by a prepped bare stem at the rear, X-wrap it on and secure the stem. Hackle size doesn't matter here because it gets trimmed.
Dub the Kapok Dubbing heavily and tightly onto the thread and wrap a consistent body forward, stopping short of the head room.
Palmer the hackle forward in open, consistent spacing (trim the first fibers so the rear turn stands at 90 degrees rather than flaring back), capture it at the thread and clip the excess.
Trim the hackle down all round to a spiky stubble shorter than the hook point, starting slow; you can always cut more. Trim it at an angle up front so the hair wing can lie down.
Clean and stack a clump of Bleached Elk Hair, less than a pencil thick. Measure the tips to about halfway down the tail, trim the butts together, and tie it down on top with two loose wraps then locking wraps, leaving room in front. Bind down all the butt ends, biting tight at the back, and smooth the transition forward.
Clean and stack a clump of Deer Hair Black about the same amount as the elk (stack twice if needed). Take it out reversed, tips forward over the eye, and measure it to about the length of the body so the tips will reach halfway up the wing when folded back. Trim the butts even.
Hold the hair on top with tips forward, take two loose wraps right behind the eye, then pull down and let go so it spins the full 360 degrees around the shank. Snug it and cover the butt ends.
Dub a little Kapok Dubbing over the butts underneath to build a bulbous base for the head, keeping the tips forward, and land the thread back behind where the elk wing starts.
Fold the deer hair back over the head with your fingers or a hair packing tool so it sits tight around the fly, wrap over the fold to form the collar, and whip finish over it.
Trim the under-hairs of the collar close to the thread, using the elk wing as a guide for where to start, without cutting so far that it comes undone.
