Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig hook (TMC 403BL), 10-12
  • Thread Match squirrel color 70 denier

Materials

  • Plated dumbbell eyes Nickel/black dumbbell eyes (small)
  • Pine squirrel zonker strip Black or olive rabbit strip (one (tail + body))
  • SLF dubbing Match squirrel (body)
  • Pine squirrel fur (dubbing loop) Match squirrel (collar)

How to tie it

  1. Lash small plated dumbbell eyes near the front of the jig hook with tight figure-8 wraps so the fly rides hook-point-up.
  2. At the bend, tie in a pine-squirrel zonker strip for the tail, about one shank long, flesh-side down.
  3. Dub a slim body of matching SLF dubbing forward to the midpoint.
  4. Fold or palmer the squirrel strip forward over the back to just behind the eyes and tie it down, keeping the profile slim.
  5. Spin a pinch of pine squirrel in a dubbing loop and wrap a sparse collar behind the eyes.
  6. Build a small thread head around the eyes, whip finish, and cement.
