Golden pheasant tippets (tail) Orange/black barred golden pheasant tippets (6 fibres from a small feather, two bars showing)
Hackle tips (wings) Light cream or dun hackle tips (2, matched)
Rabbit dubbing (body) Cream or light yellow rabbit dubbing (3 in noodle)
Dry fly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)
Head cement Clear head cement (One drop)
How to tie it
Lay a brown thread base back to the start of the bend.
Pick a small golden pheasant tippet feather so that two bars show at the tail length you want. Hold the feather by the tips, reach your scissors in about six fibres down and pull the rest of the feather away so the tips stay aligned; tie the bunch in at the bend, check the length, secure it and bury the butts.
Take two matched light hackle tips, tips aligned, convex sides together so they splay slightly, and tie them in as upright wings at about the 70% point, no more than about one and a half hook-gapes tall; trim the excess, minding the tail.
Stand the wings up with thread wraps in front of them, then split them with two sets of figure-eight wraps until they sit well apart.
Take the thread back to the rear, dub a 3 inch noodle of cream rabbit and wind the body forward to the wings, with one wrap in front of them; back the dubbing off if you have too much for that front wrap.
Tie in a prepared grizzly hackle in front of the wings, taking the first two wraps of the stem back behind them so you can start wrapping there.
Take the thread to just behind the eye and snip the butt of the hackle. Wind two or three turns of hackle behind the wings, then zigzag through and continue in front, pushing the fibres back as you go. It should end up bushy.
Hold the hackle back, build the head right behind the eye without taking the thread too far back, whip finish and add head cement.
